PORT ANGELES – The Pirate Golf Tournament, one of Peninsula College’s signature athletic fund raising events, is approaching a record turnout, but there are still openings.
The four-person scramble-format tournament, set for 9 a.m. on June 4 at Cedars at Dungeness, has 31 teams registered with room for five more teams, according to tournament director and head men’s basketball coach Mitch Freeman.
“We are on track for the biggest field we have had since running the tournament at The Cedars at Dungeness,” Freeman said.
Participants in this year’s event will be treated to more prizes for long drives, closest to the pin competitions, hole in one competitions, and team winners.
“Coach Freeman and his tournament committee have put together a great event,” said Rick Ross, Associate Dean for Athletics and Student Life. “The proceeds go to support athletic scholarships. The financial support from this event, from Pirate Casino Night, and from our annual sponsors and boosters directly contributes to our success.”
“This year, our four teams won four conference championships, they placed first, second, third and top-10 in the Washington-Oregon Northwest Athletic Conference and we had the highest athletic grade point average in our modern history. That would not be happening without that community support,” Ross said.
The entry fee is $100 and includes green fee, golf cart, tee prize and lunch. Golfers are encouraged to bring extra cash to participate in a variety of drawings and games. Registration begins at 8 a.m. A shotgun start follows at 9.
Tournament sponsors include 7 Cedars Casino, The Cedars at Dungeness, Next Door Gastropub, Swain’s, Brown & Brown Insurance, Haworth Dental, Port Angeles Hardwood, First Federal, Windermere Real Estate and Wilder Auto Center.
